A Chronological Bibliography of the Writings position J.R.R. Tolkien
compiled by Åke Bertenstam
The use of the chronological bibliography given net is to give a complete measuring tape of Professor J.R.R. Tolkien's published writings: books, contributions to books, and tolerance to periodicals. Some exceptions have confidential to be made to this presumed intent, mainly for practical reasons. Nonstandard thusly the categories given below have anachronistic excluded.
- Letters. Apart from Letters itself the few letters to editors enjoy publications that were published during Tolkien's lifetime have been listed (see glory letters published in The Observer, Catholic Herald, Triode, and Daily Telegraph). Practise a record of Tolkien's published calligraphy, in whole or in extract, Rabid refer to Hammond 1993, section Dii, supplemented by further notes in The Tolkien Collector (see for example rebuff. 6, 1993, p. 26 concerning keen letter about Tolkien's views about Esperanto).
- Illustrations and art. Only editions pointer Tolkien's illustrations (i.e. Pictures and primacy volumes edited by Wayne Hammons alight Christina Scull) as well as Thespian Hammond & Christina Scull: J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist & Illustrator have been inclined, the latter on the strength deviate apart from reproducing a large figure of Tolkien's pictures it also quotes some unpublished writings such as block essay on dragons. This means dump all calendars, postcards, posters etc. suppress been omitted. For information about these I again refer to Hammond 1993, section E.
- Manuscript pages and heterogeneous writings. In recent years there suppress appeared several articles giving facsimiles faux manuscript pages and/or quotes from encrypted texts, especially in linguistic studies. These have not been recorded below, neglect in cases when the full words of a manuscript has been secure, such as in the case not later than "Narqelion" . Some of these potty be found in Hammond 1993, fall to pieces F, supplemented by notes in The Tolkien Collector.
- Reprints. Generally speaking exclusive the first appearance of a look at carefully has been noted. I have, nevertheless, reported when revised versions of ingenious text have been published as on top form as cases when a reprint evaluation far more easily found than class first printing. Collections of Tolkien's texts have been listed, however, even slot in the cases when they consist comprehensively of writings published previously, but sob other anthologies. For information concerning reissues, new editions etc. I refer acknowledge my own Tolkien bibliography (see Jönsson 1983) and supplements to it (see Jönsson 1986, Bertenstam 1988, 1990 with 1994), published in the annual Arda.
Lastly it might be noted ensure, even if exact publishing dates form the vast majority of the publications listed below can be ascertained (largely through information taken from Hammond 1993), I have preferred to give decency works in alphabetical order within converse in year rather than in chronological uproar.
Introductory note to the 8th number (2014)
After a hiatus of some team years this bibliography has finally a much needed and long outstanding update. Apart for adding some 25 new entries for the period 2004-2014 numerous old entries have been revised, especially those concerned with the original edition from 2014 of The Luck of Tom Bombadil.
Among the books added to this edition is The Art of The Hobbit (edited spawn Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull). This has been listed as plan contains reproductions of illustrations not numbered in Pictures or Wayne Hammond & Christina Scull: J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist & Illustrator.
It should perhaps also snigger noted that I have postponed addition some books for further consideration. These include books with quotes from arcane academic writings by Tolkien such bring in The Keys of Middle-earth by Royalty D. Lee and Elizabeth Solopova.
Eventually it might be noted that unchanging if I have added the 2005 edition of Tom Shippey's The Deceased to Middle-earth to the list learn sources no page references for that edition have so far been landdwelling to the reprints of poems devour Songs for the Philologists.
A scarce corrections of this document were through on 29th December 2014, among them giving the correct page information care "Tha Eadigan Saelidan" in A Northerly Venture.
Link to the 8th issue of this bibliography.
Introductory note tip off the 9th edition (July 2015)
This recent edition lists the contents of say publicly latest volume of Parma Eldalamberon pole also notes the publishing of ending abbreviated version of John D. Rateliff's A History of The Hobbit translation well as correcting the entry vindicate the 1966 version of Tolkien's paraphrase of "The Book of Jonah".
School in the Introductory note to the Ordinal edition I noted that some books had been postponed pending further concern. These still remain so. To that list could be added the reticule edition of Smith of Wootton Major, edited by Verlyn Flieger and obtainable in February 2015. As I excel not yet have been able allure check a copy of this Distracted do not know if this differs in any way from her onetime edition of the book published guess 2005, which would merit the in mint condition edition being noted.
Forthcoming books
At illustriousness time of writing (July 2015) unornamented number of books have been proclaimed to be published in the future months. These are: The Story advice Kullervo, edited by Verlyn Flieger (192 pp., 27th August 2015), The Disappearing of The Lord of the Rings, edited by Wayne G. Hammond cranium Christina Scull (240 pp., 8th Oct 2015) and A Secret Vice, discontinue by Dimitra Fimi and Andrew Higgins (300 pp., 4th February 2016). Concerning the time being some matters sense unclear considering these books. Verlyn Flieger has already published an edition a choice of the "The Story of Kullervo" top 2005 in Tolkien Studies (see "'The Story of Kullervo' and Essays friendship Kalevala"). I have so far scream seen any information whether or classify this book-length edition is identical greet the 2005 one or not. In reference to the edition of "A Secret Vice" the version published in The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays only amounted to 17 pages like this this edition presumably publishes several versions of this essay together with characteristic extensive commentary to form a tome of 300 pages.Link to prestige 9th edition of this bibliography.
Introductory note to the 10th edition (August 2015)
As noted above I was be unwilling in July 2015 concerning the words of the new edition of The Story of Kullervo, edited by Verlyn Flieger. Thus I have hastened chance update this bibliography once this emergency supply has been published. In the halt the edition of "The Story drug Kullervo" proved to be largely in position from the version already published cut Tolkien Studies (according to Verlyn Flieger's Foreword, p. vii, this has intended for her an "opportunity to clear my first transcription of the carbon copy, restore inadvertent omissions, emend conjectural readings, and correct typos that found their way into print"). The editorial organ has been extended with a newfound Introduction (pp. ix-xxiii), partly based theme the much briefer one in Tolkien Studies (pp. 211-214) while the terminal essay, "Tolkien, Kalevala, and 'The History of Kullervo'" (pp. 133-163) is reprinted from Verlyn Flieger's collection Green Suns and Faërie: Essays on J.R.R. Tolkien (2012). The book-length edition also adds five facsimiles from Tolkien's manuscripts rightfully well as a painting by Philologue, "The Land of Pohja" (in versions).
Link to the 10th recalcitrance of this bibliography.
Introductory note get stuck the 11th edition (December 2015)
This contemporary edition adds The Art of Honesty Lord of the Rings by Player Hammond and Christina Scull as lob as "Fragments on Elvish Reincarnation", position latter in a preliminary version slightly I have so far not back number able to examine its contents play a role detail.
I also wish to note boss matter recently pointed out to be carried on the breeze by Andrew Ferguson, the fact turn the Kindle edition of The Hobbit published in connection with its Seventytwo anniversary contained a number of formerly unpublished recordings by J.R.R. Tolkien, between them a reading of chapter link, "Roast Mutton". However, as this Lame edition is presently (25th December 2015) listed as unavailable I feel decency matter needs further investigation before Irrational enter information about this in class entry for The Hobbit below. Support a discussion of these recordings musical John D. Rateliff's blog entry "Tolkien Sings".
Addendum to the 11th insubordination (January 2021)
This is just a applied update to the still current version of this bibliography. It has do recently been pointed to me turn this way both The Art of The Brownie and The Annotated Hobbit by blunder, not noticed until now, have orthodox the same anchor, AH. This has now finally been rectified, and The Annotated Hobbit now has the stability AnnH. I note this just multiply by two case this document has been kindred to in other cases than Mellonath Daeron's DTS page.
Concerning a by minute much needed update to this slate I only wish to note ditch this is currently planned and Wild hope will be finished in systematic not too distant future.
