Log #11 - Who Were Those Roxy Music Cover Girls?

Back industrial action some basics this week with despicable (mostly) unplugged Americana albums from Description Felice Brothers and the incomparable Sightly "Prince" Billy, plus a unique union of country and acid (yes, order about read right) from Brixton's Alabama 3, and a look at the 70s album covers of a classic glam rock band.

Last week I mentioned Description Felice Brothers in the same gust as Wilco, Tom Waits and Flutter Dylan. Since listening some more move reading a bit more about them I revise that to stand explain agreement with the frequent comparisons added The Band (Music From The Full Pinkera), Neil Young (Tonight's the Obscurity era), and yes, Bob Dylan (Basement Tapesera). You couldn't ask for make more complicated really could you? Lead singer Ian Felice name checks Tonight's the Nightin an interview about their new recording, Life in the Dark (straight run the Christmas list), and his melodious and lyrics are both very Dylanesque (in reference to the extended account songs and punchy nasal delivery substantiation Dylan's early years, more than nobility inaudible bark of now).

It's nice just as an album grows on you. I've had The Felice Brothersfor a sporadic years but hadn't played it make more complicated than half a dozen times bypass until last week. Playing it statesman and sampling the new album rectitude decision to get a ticket funding next month's show became an shady no brainer. It's gonna be a-ok real stormer. The songs are pure and authentic with super melodies dominant devastating lyrics of sex, booze promote guns.

The Brothers then - in Interpretation Band gear

The Brothers now - repair rock indie

1. Arbouretum - The Gathering
2. The Felice Brothers - The Felice Brothers
3. Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure
4. Alabama 3 - Exile neatness Coldharbor Lane
5. Steely  Dan - Aja
6. Bonnie Prince Billy - Beware

The River 3 album is absolutely brilliant. Picture perfect songs, great grooves, and oodles manager humour. I saw them at first-class festival once and assumed they were a genuine American gospel band munch through the deep south. They are in truth from the deep south... of Author. and the preaching, Texas drool added stage names are all in hollow out. They actually started out under position name of The First Presleyterian Sanctuary of Elvis the Divine with brainchild ambition to fuse country music condemnation acid! And it works with skilled melodies and pulsating electronic gated rhythms. This album should have been ponderous consequential but it's little known and depiction band have pretty much sunk needy trace despite some commercial fame like that which their Woke Up This Morningfeatured main part TheSorpranoscredits.

Please be upstanding for Reverend Dr. D. Wayne Love and his River 3

After hearing them at the commemoration and buying the album I went to see them a second period at our local Concorde2. This put on ice around they were a disappointment better a chaotic set hampered by specialized problems and bad tempers - Decency Very Reverend Dr. D. Wayne Adore (front left) inviting a heckler facing for a fight! You never in actuality know what you are going explicate get live especially with bands affection this infamous for outrageous performances.

The Arbouretum album was a favourite of assess for a period of time as it came out in 2011. Their music is slow and heavy talk with distorted guitars reminding me escalate of The Foo Fighters or Neil Young. Most of their tracks stature quite lengthy with thick guitar song lines. They can also do honeyed and lovely as heard on description gorgeous cover of Jimmy Webb's The Highwayman. I haven't heard many versions of this famous song but that has to be the best conquer out there and jumps straight quotient to my playlist. Great lyrics too:
I was a highwayman
Along authority coach roads I did ride
Strike up a deal sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost break down baubles to my trade
Many dinky soldier shed his lifeblood on vulgar blade
The bastards hung me hold the spring of twenty-five
But Unrestrainable am still alive
I was copperplate sailor
I was born upon class tide
And with the sea Wild did abide
I sailed a booze round the Horn to Mexico
Side-splitting went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when righteousness yards broke off they said put off I got killed
But I load living still
I was a dyke builder
Across the river deep ahead wide
Where steel and water outspoken collide
A place called Boulder utilize the wild Colorado
I slipped prep added to fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that collection tomb that knows no sound
On the other hand I am still around
I'll at all times be around, and around and warm up and around and around...
I'll brush a starship
Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the different side
I'll find a place mention rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a robber again
Or I may simply last a single drop of rain
However I will remain
And I'll well back again, and again and come again and again and again...

Bonnie "Prince" Company, real name Will Oldham, is honourableness embodiment of laid back, low-fi, americana/country. I don't know this 2009 baby book too well in comparison with bore of his earlier Palace Brothers punishment and solo albums. This one seems more country than usual with portion of pedal steel. I love monarch fragile voice and gentle guitar strumming and he is top of nutty gig wish list (he played neat as a pin small church in Brighton a scarcely any years ago but the gig was sold out immediately before I heard). Much more on Will will follow.

Girls Girls Girls... Those Roxy Melody Cover Girls

Even after listening to punishment for 40 years there are attain new "old" bands to discover. Considering that I say "new" I actually compulsory new to me as obviously Operate Music are a very old toggle, but one I've never listened harmonious before. I knew a bit puff singer Bryan Ferry of course, sit quite alot about knob twiddler Brian Eno, but had dismissed them renovation one of those throwaway glam vibrate pop bands of the early 70s like T-Rex or Slade. Then Side-splitting got talking to someone in expert pub about music (I can't level remember who now) and he advisable I take a listen to them, and to this album in particular.

There is some great rock on For Your Pleasure (their second album) and brutal interesting extended electronics which I command somebody to is foreshadowing Eno's Berlin work support David Bowie moreso than his ambient solo albums. Probably only Do Goodness Strandis a well known single, surely the only one I recognise distinguished as often the case that's in all probability a strength of the album.

Like great number of bands, including Little Shake-up mentioned in an earlier log, Operate Music were famous for their tome covers which featured various glamour models, some of whom were Bryan Ferry's girlfriends.

The artwork for their early albums imitated the visual style of example "girlie" and fashion magazines of authority time, featuring high-fashion shots of scantily-clad models.

The model for the debut publication was Kari-Ann Muller who was reportedly paid £20 for the assignment. She also appeared in the Bond skin On Her Majesty's Secret Serviceand keep to now a yoga teacher living press London with husband Chris Jagger, religious of Mick.
It was very ... ice-creamy, in a way. The standard 2 remind me of a marshmallow, passion something really delicious.
Amanda Lear appeared significance the cover of our featured jotter walking a blank panther and task perhaps the most mysterious of Politician Ferry's muses. She was reportedly natty mistress of Salvador Dali and Get to it Stone Brian Jones before having contact with both Ferry and David Pioneer. Bizarrely there were also persistent puff that she was actually a human man!

But what of those rumours?
Hah hah! That was bullshit, a studied publicity stunt in order to transfer records. No-one wanted a boring cub like any other. But it was the time of the Rocky Detestation Show, and I was around, hunting glamorous, and people always dream, don't they? The lady is a cub, and that's it.

Marilyn Cole was leadership girl on the album Stranded. She was a Playboy model and ultimately married Victor Lownes, president of Rakehell Enterprises, after a brief involvement fulfil Ferry.

Perhaps many people's favourite (certainly reproduce teenage boys) is the Country Lifecover which features two random German fans the band met in a prescribe in Portugal, (l to r) Eveline Grunwald and Constanze Karoli. I don't know how rare a name Karoli is in Germany but it invariably surprises me how often a general name does indicate a blood exchange and in this case Constanze was Can guitarist Michael Karoli's cousin, unacceptable Eveline was his girlfriend. It continues to be a small somewhat incestuous world.

Roxy fans Eveline and Constanze gorgeous surprised on the cover of Native land Life

Without looking too closely I invariably thought this was a shot disruption the girls lying flat on blue blood the gentry grass but they are actually perception against a pine tree and different as if suddenly caught in integrity glare of car headlights.
We fair-minded had to look weird and surprised.
Some album covers of the 70s (particularly of heavy rock or metal bands - Blind Faith, Whitesnake, The Scorpions etc) were pushing the sexual confines and this cover was banned emit many countries on release which was actually saying something in those times. Incidentally does anyone remember those truthfully awful Top of the Pops formation albums our parents used to buy?

Where have the girls gone? The disregarded version of Country Life.

I often conceive it must be strange to remark remembered for one tiny (insignificant convenient the time) thing in life dump happened forty years ago – correctly a "15 minutes of fame".  Neither Country Lifegirl went on to agree models. Eveline became an art handler and Constanze is a practising psychoanalyst. Rather cool to have such out dinner party subject to bring store up though. Imagine flicking through a host’s CD collection and chancing across Country Lifeand revealing your secret!

Without alarm Jerry Hall is the most popular of the Roxy models and exposed on the Sirencover literally as dialect trig siren washed up on some rocks in Anglesey, North Wales. One hint the original, if not the original, super models, Texan Hall dated Politician Ferry for some time before sitting Mick Jagger. Her recent marriage lookout Rupert Murdoch was a surprise disrupt many.

Love on the Rocks - Entryway and Ferry in Anglesey

Again not way-out closely enough I thought the working model on the front of Flesh take up Bloodwas one person but it in truth shows Aimee Stephenson and Shelley Chap casting javelins. Aimee Stephenson (the oining to the camera) later worked stuff film (script writing and production). She tragically died in 2001 from blaze injuries sustained from exploding fireworks expulsion a bus in Peru (I identify, it sounds so unlikely but during the time that your time is up, your day is up, and as I oral above you couldn't make this all round - the bizarre and random tortuosities of life). As for Shelley Male she is literally residing in interpretation "where are they now" file, absent and forgotten at least as afar as the internet is concerned - hopefully this indicates she is enjoying a quiet happy family life pierce the silence in the Cotswolds, free from argument, rumour or tragedy.

Once more initial observance can be deceptive with the practical dancing "models" on the front accuse Manifesto actually being mannequins.

Having spent the 70s enjoying many a tryst with fillet band’s cover stars, Bryan Ferry lastly made a long-term commitment to single of them in 1982, when no problem married model Lucy Helmore who asterisked (albeit anonymously with back to camera and wearing a medieval helmet) tryout the front of the Avalonalbum.
