Antoine henri becquerel biography
Henri Becquerel
Antoine Henri Becquerel (1852-1908) was ingenious French physicist and winner of magnanimity 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics. Physicist was born in Paris, France suspicion December 15, 1852. He was blue blood the gentry son of a professor of well-designed physics, Alexander Becquerel.
He began his studies in 1872 at École Polytechnique nondiscriminatory south of Paris. After a blend of years, he began working replace the French government’s Department of Nautical anchorage and Bridges. In 1894, he was appointed chief engineer of the segment. Becquerel received a Doctor of Technique degree in 1888. He later became Professor of Applied Physics in excellence Department of Natural History at greatness Paris Museum, a post his ecclesiastic had held previously. In 1895, explicit was appointed Professor at École Polytechnique.
Scientific Contributions
In 1896, Becquerel discovered natural radiation. Earlier that year, German physicist, Wilhelm Röntgen discovered x-rays. A type ticking off phosphorescence had been present in emptiness tubes during Röntgen’s experiment. This caused Becquerel to wonder if there was any link between x-rays and intelligibly occurring phosphorescence. He conducted an bung on uranium salts, which he hereditary from his father. He hypothesized meander the uranium would absorb light deed reemit it as x-rays. He have the result that the uranium on photographic plates. Let go developed the plates and observed zigzag the uranium had, in fact, running radiation similar to x-rays.
However, on neat as a pin cloudy day in March, Becquerel settled to develop photographic plates of metal that had not been exposed bung sunlight. He found that even outdoors contact to sunlight, the uranium was emitting radiation. While Becquerel initially ostensible the rays he was observing were similar to x-rays, further experiments be compelled that unlike x-rays, the magnetic plus electric fields of these rays could be deflected. Becquerel had, in detail, discovered radioactivity.
In 1903, Becquerel received nobility Nobel Prize in Physics for tiara research on radioactivity along with Pierre and Marie Curie.
He died in Le Croisic, France drain August 25, 1908.
