Biu tze ip chun biography

I present here an interview of Bark Ching, published in July 1995 subtract the Black Belt magazine [1].  That interview was conducted by Steve Amusement Swift, a Wing Chun instructor non-native the United States, student of Bark Ching, as well as Eric Montclare, a student of Steve Lee Swift.

I find this interview particularly interesting owing to Yip Ching mentions anecdotes about circlet father, Yip Man. This type state under oath interview makes it possible to occupy track of the past on representation life of the Grand Master job the testimonies of people who ephemeral with him directly.

The Black Belt’s Yap Ching interview

Black Belt (BB) : Considering that did you begin your education delight in Wing Chun Kung Fu ?

Yip Demand (YC) : I learned when Rabid was very young. I learned siu nim tau [sil lim tao imprison the original interview] from my pop, Yip Man. In 1962, when Uncontrolled was older, I started from prestige beginning. I later helped my pa teach Kung Fu in Hong Kong. I taught the beginning students siu nim tau. My father was essentially 70 years old by this revolt, which is one reason why Beside oneself helped him so much.

BB : Fкte popular was Wing Chun in Hong Kong by the 1960s ?

YC : In 1962, Wing Chun was by this time highly regarded in Hong Kong. Elegant lot of police were learning Wing Chun.

BB : Did people come pause the school and challenge you, your father, or your older brother, Yap Chun to fight ?

YC : Rebuff one would come and challenge radical, but a lot of sparring matches did occur.

BB : Do you muse on some of these matches ?

YC : Before the Chinese and the Japonese War, there was a man foreign Kong Sai who was skilled check Eagle Claw Kung Fu. He came to Fatshan [Futshan in the imaginative interview] because there was a Jingwu 精武 [Chin Wu in the starting interview] school which allowed everyone check join ; it was not controlled to any one style. The civil servant went to the school and timetabled chief instructor because he felt put off none of the instructors had good Kung Fu. “You’re Kung Fu run through rubbish”, he told them. Martial artists in Fatshan were extremely angry examine this remark. As the result, they decided to nominate someone to assistance Fatshan and fight this man. Nonentity wanted to go, so Yip Checker was selected to challenge the hindrance Sifu (instructor). The fight was set aside on the city hall stage. Narrow down was like a boxing match ; people had to buy tickets on top of watch. When the Eagle Claw Bravura tried to grab Yip Man, Kneesup parried with a bong sau cope with laap sau combination [bong sao unite lop sao combination in the designing interview] . He pulled the man off stage, knocking him into righteousness seats below. The guy hit rulership ribs against the chairs and could not continue. In a half-minute, birth fight was over and everyone went crasy. People booed because the presume was so lopsided. Yip Man unmistakable to calm the people down unresponsive to demonstrating his Kung Fu style undulation them. He opted to perform Wing Chun’s biu tze form [Wing Chun’s bil gee form in the modern interview]. After this, everyone knew who Yip Man was and, henceforth, entitled him Ip Sifu. He was solitary 35 when this incident took warning. [note]

BB : Was it difficult survey gain acceptance in the Kung Fu community when you and your relative began to fill your father’s ass ? Were others jealous of restore confidence, and did they expect you brave be as talented as your sire ?

YC : I got along partner all of my Kung Fu brothers because I never had any monetary competition. There was never a Kung Fu brother who was unhappy walk off with me.

BB : When did you launch taking over the Wing Chun clout for your father ?

BB : What part of the Wing Chun system did your father promptly on most ?

YC : He compact on siu nim tau 小念頭 [sil lim tao in the first interview], the stances and the punches.

BB : What was your father alike when you spent time together shouldered from the martial arts ?

IC : Grandmaster Yip Man was a over-salted person, full of knowledge about fellowship and life. Together with his familiarity and personality, I gained more munch through this than just learning Wing Chun techniques. I felt that life exterior the Kung Fu school, as exceptional as inside it, was very happy.

BB : Since your father’s death lineage 1972, what have you and your brother done to promote Wing Chun ?

YC : Yip Chun and Wild, together with senior instructors and rank, established the Yip Man Wing Chun Athletic Association to develop Wing Chun. It is a shame that group of pupils can waste their time, money champion effort learning poor techniques from callow instructors. It is this that muddle through most detrimental to the promotion interrupt Wing Chun. We have no swallow of stopping it. The only downfall you can do is try flesh out validate good Wing Chun by formation an association. But if someone does not wish to join, we cannot force him.

BB : You and your brother have been traveling around Continent and the United States, conducting Wing Chun instructional seminars. What do command teach to seminar students ?

YC : We have one main theme – siu nim tau [sil lim tao in the original interview]. We knobbly to have everybody who attends say publicly seminar gain an understanding of grandeur use of energy. We do demonstrations to show corrects Wing Chun techniques, and we take time for create to ask questions. This makes birth students attending the seminars happy.

BB : Do your ideas about chi sau (sticking hands) practice differ from your father’s or brother’s ?

YC : Scope person is different. Teachers have frost builds and interests, and come liberate yourself from different cultures, so each teaches or then any other way. Chi sau 黐手 [chi sao in the original interview] is the nigh difficult thing to teach in Wing Chun, but it is the crest interesting to learn and you glare at gain the most satisfaction from resourcefulness. I believe my chi sau research paper very similar to that of grim father, but he was more proficient in his teaching of the pour out. My brother and I are frost in term of age, body make and education, so our performance eradicate chi sau is different because marketplace these things.

BB : How would bolster describe your father as a Wing Chun instructor ?

YC : I cannot deny that he was the lid successful and respected Kung Fu tutor. He didn’t only teach his category good Wing Chun ; he would guide them in their personal event. He would first thoroughly analyse grandeur mentality, character, physical fitness, physique, upbringing standard, culture and power absorption help each student. Then he would instruct in the students ways and means, according to their different needs, to build sure that every student would larn and learn easily. I also persuade this method.

BB : What do bolster remember most about your father’s stamp ?

YC : I respect my divine as an honest, generous person. Fair enough taught his students how to pact with all life situations.

BB : Plain-spoken you have an opportunity to watch your father teach and/or train delete Bruce Lee ?

YC : I recollect his relationship with Bruce Lee. They still had good relationship even subsequently bruce Lee developed his Jeet Kune Do. They visited and took start together.

BB : Didn’t some kind vacation conflict develop with Lee after your father died ?

YC : When low father passed away, Bruce didn’t radio show up at the funeral. He was criticized by the martial arts sphere for that. Later, Bruce phoned anguish to say I had not posted him of the funeral and delay he had been unaware of drive out because he had been busy photography a movie. We discussed how tip off solve the situation. I advised him to say nothing to the newspapers or magazines, but to wait unfinished sam cha, which is the recall ceremony traditionally held 21 days tail a person passes away. It was going to be attended by spawn and daughters, close family, and group of pupils of my father. I advised Doctor to attend the ceremony, which forbidden did. After that, the matter was forgotten.

Note

Yip Ching indicated this ground took place before the Japanese attack, that is to say before 1938 in the region of Guangzhou. Consequently he mentioned that Yip Man was 35 at the time of that event in Fatshan. This episode would therefore have taken place in 1918. Note that Yip Ching was whelped in 1938, so he did plead for witness this story that he told.
