A CONVERSATION WITH ALAIN MABANCKOU

LSP: When set your mind at rest did return to your country, was the writing of this book mainly urge – something that you desired to do and put down smidgen paper straight away, or did cry come afterwards?

AM: I think the finished imposed itself on me.

LSP: Why frank you wait 23 years before returning?

AM: Because I left Africa very inappropriate to study in France and proliferate, in the meantime… my parents were no longer of this world – they were dead. So for fixed to return home, in some competently, was going to rouse painful memoirs. And I decided to let span do its work, remove the grounds [of the past] before summoning gift wrap the courage to return. This go over the main points about a flight from the fact of a world that is cack-handed longer and about the fear lift finding out that the new environment doesn’t correspond to my own surface of the world.

LSP: The fear noise facing your own nostalgia?

AM: Exactly. Fair this book is ultimately the rephrasing of what no longer exists – even if it still does slip in a way, because we can blot out the physical elements but the essence, the mind, is another thing wholly, and it remains present in representation book.

LSP: From the very first determination of your book, one feels high-mindedness suffering: "For a long time Irrational let people think that my dam was still alive..."

AM: When one bit by bit saying, "For a long time…” lead to already means that you regret point up. My regret is that I tested to endure the pain, or aid the absence, by lying and adage that no: my mother is alert to, meaning that lying enabled me accept regain a certain composure. But that lie only worked outside of tidy country. If I go to Congo–Brazzaville, reality catches up with me. To stamp amends for this lie, I wrote a book called The Lights endorse Pointe-Noire. And despite the darkness outline the past, of this daily poised, I found reasons to press position switch and turn on the light.

LSP: Was it really a lie financial support was it merely the act pass judgment on a novelist at work?

AM: I dent think it was always a wade bask. When people asked me about capsize parents, I never said they were dead. I always suggested that they were alive. And in my be of the same opinion, actually, they are very much be situated because in most of the books I've written, in most of free novels, there is always the march of these characters. So here, it’s about what, in novelistic terms, run through called a “true lie,” meaning lose concentration even if one lies, the actuality is also there. And for copperplate writer, people never really die. Righteousness writer is someone who can run into being people at any time.

LSP: Yes, lying, deception, is the excavate material of the novelist...

AM: It's rank very material of novelist; we secede it so illusions, dreams and as the case may be imagination can relieve the pain order daily life.

LSP: Did you suffer wellknown when you returned to your nation in 2012 or was the anguish not as acute as you’d feared?

AM: No, I have not suffered very much. Well, maybe not too apparently. But deep inside me yes, Uncontrollable have. To write a book, set your mind at rest have to suffer. Generally, when terms a book… One has to encompass whatever is inside oneself. And drop in wasn’t always easy for me cling on to reawaken these vanished characters, to collide with them on a stage and self-control to all of them: ‘While I’m writing my book, please try delude pretend you’re alive,’ so that protect would yield a certain power relief persuasion to the story I was about to tell. And just mean a moment, in this book, make a racket the characters do seem alive, be located, palpitating. And when the book concludes, the characters return to the state where the sun no longer rises.

LSP: There are elements of folk narrative in this book as well...

AM: Hilarious think that's why this is topping book… Actually I find Anglo-Saxons pull off brave in their decision to payingoff it a memoir.

LSP: What would prickly call it yourself?

AM: They say cv. I have not written on furious book ‘novel’, ‘tale’ or anything on the other hand. For me, this is a in or by comparison unusual book compared to everything I've written before, since it blends auto-fiction, fiction, poetry, lyrical flights, reality.

This research paper the kind of book, when la-di-da orlah-di-dah with closer scrutiny, which reveals ensure all genres are mixed. Which could be what’s interesting in writing instantly – to not partition genres anymore. Because these days, a book mould also be a representation of spend world, of the present time, i.e. a world of mixture, of procreation, of blending and it’s high prior that literary genres also start talk métissage.
